Work of Art
Prudent practicality meets art-loving aesthetics in this elevated, three-storey home on a steep site at the rural edge of suburbia. Long before construction began, a cherry picker was used to scope the outlook to guarantee impeccably positioned windows with picture perfect views. And the interior was always going to be an art gallery, given the owners’ extensive collection, so extra nogging was added between wall studs to hang larger artworks or multiple pieces. Other thoughtful additions include a future-proofing lift shaft and built-in ladders on the roof, to service chimney, gutters and solar panels. Upper storey sliding windows double as fire escapes. The classic red barn design is modernised with durable brick and low maintenance vertical aluminium weatherboards, softened by existing mature trees and exterior timber finishes like rustic railway sleepers edging the front garden beside a Vitex boardwalk marching to the front door. The custom-built floor-to-ceiling front door, with bespoke handles, opens into a multi-functional abode that allows one wing to function as a separate apartment for returning adult children. Entertaining happens in the main living area and the upper level provides a private retreat, complete with library, lounge, art room and oodles of attic storage.
